Loughborough Shots Again! (19 Apr 08)

A busy week after the Easter trip, so did not make any arrangements to travel out for the weekend. Instead, I spent a lazy and relaxing weekend checking out Queens Park and the Carillon in Loughborough as well as soaking in the market atmosphere. It's quite amazing that after close to 2 and a half months studying here, I have yet to visit Queens Park, one of the top attractions in our sleepy Loughborough town...The whole experience was so laid-back that it just reminded me just how slow the pace of life is over here for the townsfolk in Loughborough...

Entrance to the Loughborough Carillon in Queens Park...It's the first carillon in the UK

Children's playground in the midst of Queens Park

The Carillon is actually a war memorial to the fallen

Inside the Carillon is the Museum of Armed Forces, with a display of several war relics, medals from the 1st World War

The Bandstand, a pavillon for performances for Loughborough

Charnwood Museum....resembles a small manor situated in the middle of the park...ducks frolicking arnd in the pond....fat ducks....obviously well-fed by the town-people

Arrival of spring means more flowers starting to really bloom....what I have always liked about Loughborough is its open green spaces and large, varied nature environment...pack it with a nice slow afternoon and u get a real relaxing combi...

A "mini-Birdpark" in Queens Park, with lots of colourful birds being bred here...kinda surprised as we have never known it existed b4....

There was this couple feeding the birds so had to take a shot of them...it's been a long time since I've seen really colourful and varied birds arnd....(always see pigeons and crows everywhere....yeah....they do have them here in large numbers like in S'pore)

View of the pond from Charnwood Museum

Entrance to the Charnwood Museum. Toured the museum and it's a place where it described the history of Loughborough as well as the Charnwood Forest (which included many of the nearby country parks)...almost forgot that we were in the East Midlands, basically the very heart of England and rural forested areas...quite interesting to discover that there were ancient fossils found right here in the East Midlands so very long ago...

Swan Maze, well...actually not a maze.....dun exactly know y it's named like tt

I think the phrase "ha2 ma4 xiang3 lai4 tian1 er2 rou4" is so damn appropriate here....haha basically it means toad trying to savour the swan flesh.....so this statue sorta made me laugh...lolol :)

Walked arnd in the town centre to enjoy the market atmosphere...things are generally much cheaper at markets, which is the pasar malam we all are so familiar in S'pore...Loughborough markets only happen on thursdays and saturdays...finally had a chance to explore the market cos so far have not been to town on weekends and thursdays are my packed days with lessons...there's much more life than usual on the weekends...

Dessert at the Cheesecake shop! So far most of our cakes were ordered from here (for See Hwei and Jared's bdae)...and the price is considered one of the cheapest in town...

The dessert menu serving...yummy!

All in all, it was a very lazy afternoon and a short but well-deserved break after returning from the Easter trip. Made a few surprising discoveries about our sleepy little town, as well as a bit interested to explore the surrounding countryside in the East Midlands now....maybe will make that a weekend trip sometime soon....hmm....
