International Day (30 Apr 08)

A quick trip down to the Students Union for one of the biggest events around in Loughborough before rushing for my flight out to Scotland. It's been quite a crazy day with labs in the morning, packing for my Scotland trip and then rushing for the plane in the afternoon. But on the other hand, I promised my exchange friends that I would visit their stalls...so made a quick detour for the event...but I must say it was really well worth it....something which is very different from the International Friendship Day back in NUS. The main difference: Booze is served freely arnd in the Union for such a day!! No need any red tape for setting up stalls like in NUS...hahaha..and people from all nationalities were really dancing and partying away...even early in the afternoon!

The main Loughborough Student Union central area...couldn't take a good shot of the banner cos it was just so crowded!!

Made a stop to visit Susanna at her stall

Susanna is the only girl on exchange in chem eng, and I usually hang around with the exchange students in class. Anw..I enjoy talking with her cos she speaks English very fluently and she loves talking about her home country, Finland. Another interesting fact: her boyfriend's in S'pore now doing SEP in NUS too...and she's been to S'pore during the Easter trip...so even more topics to talk abt.

Tasted some of the sweets which Susanna mentioned..the one on the left is tyrkisk peber, a spicy sweet that's hard....but it did not seem so spicy to me....those on the right are salmiakki, some sort of salty liquorice with a bit of an acquired taste....personally felt it tasted a bit bland but quite chewy though...

Carilon cake, it's actually a form of rice cake with milk / lactose in it...tasted delicious!

Anw I continued to search for my friends at their stalls...came across many other country representatives too...Vietnam!

Other interesting countries represented: Kuwait! There is actually a room set aside for the Islam countries and I saw places like Palestine, Lebanon there...a really interesting mix of nationalities..

And Greece! Another of my dream destination to go to...kekeke

The guys at the Greek booth were really cool and spontaneous with their face painting on participants, as well as doing hand art on the girls...one of the more happening booths arnd..

Funky guy from the Bahamas...note the guy from Palestine too with his head-dress :)...some of the representatives were dressed up cos of a fashion parade show of all the different nationalities and their traditional attire in the later part of the afternoon

China!!

Japan...realised there aren't many japs arnd in Loughborough....darn! no cute jap chicks :p...the asian community has many people from China and Hong Kong, as well as Southeast Asia.

Found Valentin at his French booth

Most of the food kena taken le....but most of it I also sampled it during the International High Table liaoz...

Only thing left was the wine! French wine at its best!

Me and Valentin...the other day he was complaining about Butler Court and the people messing up his kitchen...seriously funny...anw I heard the French stall was set up quite last minute with a few guys manning the booth...

And finally how to miss out Singapore?

Teh tarik, Tiger beer, small packets of bak kwa...very S'porean...the laptop was playing the national song....

Did not manage to find Renato and Christian....later heard from Giuseppe that there wasn't an Italian stall set up....wat a pity...would have loved the pizza or gelato...anw...the whole International Day was really good and showed just how diverse and international Loughborough is...just that it was kinda rushed for me....did not really take the time to sample the food from all the different stalls and I had to give up the fashion parade.....(Heard Christina Zhang was prancing about in her black cheongsam....heng i din see and siam first if not I'm never gonna get peace from the rest of the guys...hahaha..will leave tt story for another time)
